Star Fruit

Posted on 19. Jan, 2010 by in Ingredients

Star fruits are crunchy, and have a slightly tart, acidic, sweet taste. They consist of a tough outer skin and a tangy white inside. When cut across, it shows a 5-pointed (sometimes 6-pointed) star shape, hence are named, “star fruit.” There are two varieties of star fruit – acidulate and sweet. The sweet ones can be eaten out of hand or sliced and used as a garnish or in salads. Their juice can be used in tropical drinks and smoothies. Star fruits are a good source of vitamin C, thus it is known to have helped asthmatic patients. While buying star fruits, look for shiny yellow ones that are without bruises and are not too soft. Tightly wrap star fruits in a plastic bag and store in the refrigerator.
